Kirsten Nuffer’s
Fundraiser
I am raising money for Wild Hearts in memory of my corgi, Tilly, who received her own set of wheels through their sponsorship program. Their kindness and support has forever changed my life, and gave me the ability to provide the best care possible for Tilly during our nearly 4 year battle with degenerative myelopathy.
Tilly was a sassy, stubborn, social butterfly who was my road trip buddy, my work assistant, and my very best friend. She was my first dog, who I saved up for and picked out as a puppy when I was 18.
In 2016, I found out that she likely had a genetic disease common in her breed -- degenerative myelopathy. This disease is similar to ALS in humans, and I knew that over time, Tilly’s mobility would decline, and she would need help from me or mobility aids. I was a 20-something working as a pet groomer, and I didn’t have a large income. However, everything I could spend went directly to her care. Food, supplements, physical therapy, extra vet appointments...Tilly was worth every penny. When Wild Hearts stepped in to help us with physical therapy costs and a custom wheelchair to help Tilly get around once her rear legs became paralyzed, I was moved beyond words. I don’t like to ask for help, but I immediately felt like I was part of a family. Knowing that we had help as we navigated this terrible disease was such a blessing.
Tilly got her wheels on my birthday in 2017, and they even decorated them with purple flair to match Tilly’s collar. Having the wheelchair really gave us a new way to work with Tilly and keep her strong, and keep her mind challenged. Without the wheelchair and daily exercises in it, I don’t think we would have had those 4 years.
Sadly, Tilly lost her fight with DM in April. I miss her every single second, and wish she were here with me to help with this fundraiser. I’m so grateful Tilly chose me to be her mom 13.5 years ago, and for all the wonderful people I met because of her. I would have never known about Wild Hearts, and the amazing program they have, if it weren’t for Tilly. I’ll never have words to express how much their kindness meant to us. I hope with this fundraiser more pets will be able to know their compassion and be a part of the Wild Hearts family!
